John Francis Powers Jr.

John Francis Powers Jr “Jack” passed peacefully at home on September 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, following a long and courageous battle with several health conditions. Jack was born on October 26, 1952, in Troy NY to John F Powers Sr and Marion Dwyer Powers. Jack was a long-time employee and driver for CDTA in the Troy division, where he retired in 2003, after 25 years of service. He affectionately referred to himself as a “professional driver” and shared many special, fun memories in the car on rides, road trips and chasing ambulances and fire trucks. Jack enjoyed playing the lottery, cards, and darts. He had a devoted interest in all things JFK and a true passion and love for pigs. He played in several dart leagues within the capital region and recently played for the Troy Athletic Club. He was an active member of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians (AOH) of Watervliet NY. He served as president of the Cohoes Pop Warner football program in the early 90s, and was a long-time member, and servant, of the Cohoes Moose Club. Left to honor his memory are his lifelong partner and best friend, Susan (Fatica) Zehner of Troy NY and his 8 children, James Zehner (Antoinette DeForge) of Cohoes NY, Amanda Powers of Green Island NY, Casey Schwartz (Matthew) of Flat Rock MI, Anthony Powers (Lisa) of Latham NY, Marigrace Colunio (Frank) of Clay NY, John Powers III (Jennifer) of Cohoes NY, Patrick Powers (Tiffany Bennett) of Valley Falls NY and Michaela Powers (Jena) of Cheshire MA. In addition to his children, Jack is survived by 24 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one sister, Barbara Powers. Jack is predeceased in death by his parents, John Powers Sr and Marion Dwyer Powers and one sister, Mary Powers (DiSisto). Calling hours will be at Marra Funeral Home in Cohoes on September 3, 2026, from 4-8pm. A full mass will be held at Holy Trinity Church (122 Vliet Blvd, Cohoes NY 12047) on September 4, 2026, beginning at 10:30am. Following the service, there will be a gathering at the AOH of Watervliet (1021 9th Ave, Watervliet NY 12189). A private burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford NY at a later date. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the Albany County Hospice team and to Candice Mirra and her Hand & Hand Home Care team. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jack’s name to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (Menands NY) or to the Ancient Order of the Hibernians (AOH) of Watervliet NY.
